Breast Oncology Surgeries
- Breast conserving surgery (lumpectomy): Removal of the cancerous tumor with a margin of healthy tissue.
- Mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast. This can be:
- Simple mastectomy: Removal of breast tissue only
- Modified radical mastectomy: Removal of breast tissue, some lymph nodes, and chest wall muscles.
- Radical mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast, chest wall muscles, and most lymph nodes in the armpit
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy: Removal of the first lymph node(s) to which cancer is most likely to spread.
- Oncoplastic surgery: Combining cancer removal with breast reconstruction techniques.
- Nipple-sparing mastectomy: Removal of breast tissue while preserving the nipple and areola.
